Dear NGO Founder,
It's a new week. I hope you are enjoying the extended weekend.
For this week, I announced Legal 101 for NGOs. You might be wondering how we arrived at legal tips. When I wrote the fourth letter on structure and why it is important, I made a brief mention of registration and finding out if you're legally compliant. Today's letter is as a result of a personal message I received from a founder who read the letter.
When I got the message asking me for more details on legal compliance for NGOs, my initial response was "oh, I'm a law undergraduate who hasn't gotten to that point academically, but I could research and write on it later.” Well, I didn't have to do so. I came across an informative post on the subject later that week on Instagram by the legal firm HT Legal. I saved the post and started thinking of the possibility of reaching out to them. I sent a message on Instagram and their founder was gracious enough to grant my request.
On this note, I present to you, DNF's first ever guest feature - Ms Hilda Obasanya of HT Legal, on four legal tips for a Non-profit Founder. She shares why registration is important, what tax returns have to do with NGOs, the legal relationship between you and your volunteers, and how to avoid being implicated in a charge for money laundering or other financial crimes.
Her article can be accessed via DNF's resource link, click here. If you would like to consult with her on legal matters relating to your NGO or other personal legal affairs, you can reach out to HT Legal on Instagram here.
